Vegetable Of The Month

My Veg of the month has to go to the all mighty Pea this time. I have never really had much thought about peas, until I started growing my own and the taste is unlike anything I have ever tasted. If you like to buy your peas from the supermarket you are making a mistake in my eyes the texture, smell and taste of home grown peas are astonishing compared to the crops you buy, even if they are fresh.

The Pea has had some great coverage in this month’s issue of the Kitchen Garden, and rightly so, they might be small, but they are mighty! Here is a quick guide on how best to prepare the soil for growing peas and in the spring,  you how to get the best crops out of your seeds and a great little recipe I found.

This month is the month to be harvesting your lovely pea seeds, but do not fret, October is a great time to start preparing for spring sowing. Starting to prepare the soil and it just perfect is the key when wanting to produce excellent crops.

Peas love medium loam soil with some lime content; although they will grow in most fertile soils it is extremely important that the soil is kept well watered. Before watering, mix in plenty of well-rotted compost or manure and this will not only generate good drainage and act as a reservoir for moisture it will also help combat pests and diseases over the winter months. The balance of moisture in the soil is a key element of preparing the soil; peas are picky little things they like moisture, but not too much; peas don’t like waterlogged conditions. Before sowing in the spring, February is a great time top add an extra bit of lime to the soil and allow rain to wash it into the soil. After this your soil will be ideal for peas to grow and produce fantastic crops.

Pea, Carrot and Rice Soup

  • ·         3 cups green peas, shelled
  • ·         2 carrots, peeled, sliced thin
  • ·         ½ cup rice, washed
  • ·         6 cups water, boiling
  • ·         2 tablespoons butter
  • ·         Seasonings to taste


This recipe is so easy to master; you would be able to do it with your eyes shut. When you have prepared all your ingredients mix them together in a pan and let it boil for about 20 minutes. After it has been boiling for around 20 minutes it is ready to serve, and if you want to serve it with something else, homemade bread is always a winner.
