Meet Colin, our resident plant expert. Colin’s been with us for 30 years and there isn't much he doesn't know about plants. Armed with a nice cup of tea, we cornered Colin and asked him to tell us more about his time with Notcutts.
I started my tenure with Notcutts at 19 while studying at Pershore College of Horticulture. I started (literally!) from the grass roots up, watering, weeding and displaying the centre’s plants. A very hands on, ‘get stuck in’ sort of role.
Over the next 18 years I built up my experience at a number of our centres around the country, eventually becoming a Planteria Manager and then a Centre Manager. By talking to our customers and working closely with the plants every day, I saw firsthand the great enjoyment gardening gives people. Inspired by this enthusiasm, I became Notcutts’ Plant Buyer. I've been in the role for 12 years and love what I do.
One of my favourite jobs is choosing what plants to stock. 95% of our plants come from UK growers. Notcutts forge strong links with local companies and believe in supporting our home producers. What’s more, I’ve found UK-grown plants are hardier, stockier and tougher – much better suited to our unpredictable Great British weather. Our plants may not be the cheapest, but we’re so confident in their quality we offer a 5 Year no quibble guarantee*.
Enthusiasm for plants doesn't stop with me either. All of our Planteria Managers and many of our Centre Managers have long horticultural backgrounds. We've also introduced an academy to enrich our whole team’s gardening knowledge. The bar is set high and anyone who takes part has to work hard to earn their passes (or daisy badges in this case!).
Notcutts started as a nursery and I believe those roots are still very much evident today. We’re not hobbled by our heritage though. I keep my finger firmly on the latest pulses by visiting horticultural shows and browsing gardening magazines. I’m even known for monopolising the telly when Gardener’s World is on! Plants are at the very heart of our business and the reason we’re still going strong today.
Has your Wisteria wilted? Is your shrub suffering suspicious spots? Email Colin your plant questions at Colin@notcutts.co.uk. Even better, include pictures if you can. He’ll do his best to respond to every conundrum he’s sent.
