Plant of the month

October

Tulip (bulbs!)

Not strictly a plant in our normal 'Plant of the Month' sense, but so seasonally relevant we couldn't resist! Tulips are a real beauty of the garden. Coveted in Europe when they were first introduced in the 1600s, enthusiasm for the new flowers triggered a speculative frenzy now known as 'tulip mania'. Tulips become so expensive during this time that they were treated as a form of currency. Apparently certain single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman! Crikey.

Now tulips are much more affordable, but just as beautiful. Available in a rainbow of colours, tulips are a cheerful sight in any garden. Plant this month for a spectacular Spring display.
