Plant of the month

September

Apple tree

Not strictly a plant in our normal 'Plant of the Month' sense, but so seasonally delicious we couldn't resist! Apples are easy to grow, productive and there are varieties suitable for every garden. They do take a few years to start cropping, but they're well worth the investment. There's something very satisfying about picking, storing and eating apples grown in your own garden.

It's always a good idea plant fruit trees with a pollination partner for optimum production. One great option is to buy two of the same tree (or two trees from the same pollination group) and plant within 20 metres of each other. If you don't have room in your garden, don't worry! Insects can still pollinate your tree from neighbouring trees.
