Plant of the month

Magnolia is an ancient genus. According to the RHS, Magnolias are 'trees or shrubs with astonishing goblet- or star-shaped flowers that are admired icons of spring and summer'. Magnolias love the sun and flourish best when kept out of shade. Magnolias thrive in any fertile, moist garden soil. Pruning is seldom required - usually just the occasional removal of deadwood. April is the perfect time to plant Magnolias. Choose a sheltered spot and add plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring. Browse our top picks below.
