Top Tips For The Garden In September

Garden in September

There is so much to do this month, getting ready for fall can be a time consuming task, so we here at Notcutts have split the jobs into little jobs and time consuming ones. Let’s start with the little jobs that won’t take up too much time:

  • Check on newly planted trees and water well

  • Prune and remove the last of the rose flowers

  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and daffodils

  • Resow bare patches in the lawn

  • Weeding

  • Net ponds to stop leaves falling in

  • For Christmas time, force hyacinth and narcissi bulbs

  • Rake any fallen leaves

  • Do not wait for frost warnings to move your plants indoors

Now for the big jobs, they may take longer to complete but the results will be worth the labor:

  • If your lawn is looking like it is in need of some TLC, aerate compacted areas and fill any holes or cracks with land sand. Autumn is also a great time to sow a new lawn from seed

  • It is a great idea to dig up any caladiums before the first frost, make sure to dry them and store them in a dry place to ensure they are not damaged over the winter months.

  • Pick any pears that are at the hard ripe stage. They should be left to ripen off the tree.

  • Divide overgrown perennials

  • Remove any seedlings of woody plants like maple, if left for too long they can take over the garden generating more work for you over the autumn and winter seasons.

  • Lay seeds from flower heads on newspaper and turn them often to dry. Seeds are best stored in glass jars or in envelopes and kept in a dry, dark place.

  • If your soil needs some improvement add manure, compost and leaves, this will help increase the organic matter content.
