THE SUN SHONE ON THE NORFOLK GARDENING FAYRE

The 2007 Norfolk Gardening Fayre held at Notcutts Garden Centre, Daniels Road, Norwich on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September was a huge success.

With Notcutts offering £100 worth of vouchers to be won in their quest for Norfolk's ugliest vegetable, Brian Beevor's Kohl Rabi won the inaugural Ugliest Vegetable competition. Brian is a greengrocer and nurseryman from Thrope-next-Haddiscoe in Norfolk.

"Brian's Kohl Rabi was brilliant," says garden centre manager, James Debbage. "The search for the winning vegetable encompassed the whole of Norfolk and the Kohl Rabi was on display in his farm shop when someone told Brian that he should enter it for the competition."

Over 25 attractions and organisations signed up for the fayre which is run in association with Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Society and Norwich City Council. The show sees Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Society's Early Autumn Flower Show, Allotment Fayre 2007 and the Norfolk Beekeepers Autumn Show all at one destination.

Among the exhibitors were the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Norfolk Woodturners, Drayton Patchwork Quilters, RSPB, Buglife, Norfolk Federation of Women’s Institute, Greenhouse Trust, Norfolk Vegetarian and Vegan Society, Norfolk Organic Gardeners, Norfolk Beekeepers, Friends of Norwich in Bloom plus the Norfolk Wine Makers Guilds annual show and a Norwich City Council information stall. To tantalise the taste buds the Norfolk W.I. Markets will bring their famous jams, chutneys, preserves etc. whilst visitors will be able to purchase fresh produce from allotment holders.

The East Anglian Children's Hospices will benefit from this year's fayre.

Peter Firman won the Trophy for the best amatuer exhibit in the show with his very impressive vegetables. Picture shows Mr Beevor, winner of the ugliest vegetable competition Pauline Harper won the trophy for gaining the most points throughout the show. She staged many entries, especially in the fruit and vegetable classes.
