On arrival
Open the box fully, carefully lift out the plants in their tray and water the compost if it seems dry. These plug plants should be potted up individually into 7.5-10cm (3-4in) pots of good potting compost first, watered in, grown on and then planted outside when the roots start to fill the pots. As they are cold sensitive, they can be planted outside once the last spring frosts have finished, usually around the end of May to the beginning of June – depending on where you live. Until then, keep the plants inside in a cool, but frost-free (ideally around 10-14C/50-57F) place, in good overall light but out of hot, direct sunlight. Allow the compost to slightly dry out before thoroughly watering them again. Before planting outside, they need hardening off by gradually acclimatising the plants to outdoor conditions for about a week by putting them outside during the day but bringing them back indoors in the evening for a few days, then leave out all night but covered with horticultural fleece when cold temperatures are forecast.
Planting out
Water the compost thoroughly immediately before planting out.
In containers, plant far enough apart to create a full looking displays from the start. Make sure to use a good quality multi-purpose or container compost, and water in thoroughly. To help them establish extra quickly, water them in with a dilute plant food.In beds and borders, depending on final size of the plants used, plant around 15-30cm (6-12in) apart. They will grow best in well-drained soil that doesn’t dry out. Dig the planting hole and sprinkle some compost in the bottom. Place the plant in the planting hole, adding a bit more compost if needed, so that the top of the rootball is at the same level as the soil, and add more compost around the sides of the plant. Gently firm in with your fingers or the end of a trowel or hand fork and water in thoroughly, using a dilute plant food if possible.
Growing on
Water thoroughly whenever necessary to prevent the compost or soil drying out. Plants in containers will need watering more regularly than those growing in beds and borders; drought tolerant plants, such as geraniums (pelargoniums), osteospermums and gazanias, need watering less frequently. Feed plants regularly with a high potash, liquid plant food, as recommended on the container. This really helps produce stronger, healthier plants with lots more flowers.Remove yellowing and dead leaves and deadhead wherever possible to remove fading and finished flowers plus any developing seed heads, seed pods or fruit. This keeps plants tidy, healthy and helps to encourage lots more flowers.
