How to plant a bulb lasagne
Lasagne planting, or 'layered planting', involves placing flower bulbs in layers, much like assembling a lasagne. The earliest blooms, such as crocuses and snowdrops, appear first, followed by later bloomers. This method ensures a continuous display of flowers from February to July, depending on the bulbs used.
What you’ll need:
- A large pot or container: Ensure it has good drainage.
- Quality potting compost: Essential for healthy bulb growth.
- Pebbles or crocks: For good drainage.
- Bulbs: Choose a variety that will bloom at different times (early, mid, and late season).
- Trowel: For planting.
Choosing the right bulbs
The key to a successful bulb lasagne is selecting the right combination of bulbs. You’ll want to pick bulbs that bloom in succession. Here’s a general guide:
- Early spring bloomers: Crocus, snowdrops, or early daffodils. These will be your top layer.
- Mid-spring bloomers: Hyacinths, daffodils, or early-season tulips. These will form the middle layer.
- Late spring to early summer bloomers: Late tulips, alliums, or lilies. These go in the bottom layer.
Choosing the right bulbs
The key to a successful bulb lasagne is selecting the right combination of bulbs. You’ll want to pick bulbs that bloom in succession. Here’s a general guide:
1. Make a few drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.
2. Place a layer of pebbles or crocks at the bottom, then add a layer of compost.
3. Add the first layer of bulbs (the last to bloom, e.g. tulips) and cover with compost.
4. Add the second layer of bulbs (earlier bloomers, e.g. daffodils) and cover with compost.
5. Add the third layer of bulbs (the earliest bloomers, e.g. crocuses)
6. Water well, and place in a warm sunny spot and wait for the show in spring!
Tips for success
- Container choice: A deep pot is essential to allow for multiple layers of bulbs. Ensure it has proper drainage to prevent the bulbs from rotting.
- Bulb placement: Be mindful of the depth each type of bulb requires. Larger bulbs generally need to be planted deeper, while smaller ones can be closer to the surface.
- Feeding: Bulbs are not particularly heavy feeders, but a slow-release fertiliser added to the compost can help sustain growth through the blooming period.
