

July gardening guide
July is the time of year to really enjoy your garden as an outdoor space. Borders are at their peak, perennials are in bloom, butterflies are feeding on Buddleja and the vegetable garden is rewarding all your hard work with new crops to harvest every week. The pace of work cools off a little this month with any major changes waiting until autumn, that said, our July gardening guide reveals what essential jobs need our attention to keep gardens looking their best.
Checklist
- Apply a summer lawn weed, feed and moss killer if your lawn needs an overhaul
- Make sure that main crop Potatoes don’t go short of water as tubers begin to swell
- Damp down the green house floor each morning to help reduce the temperature
- Feed and water herb pots regularly as they will be very root-bound by now
- Check Clematis for signs of Clematis Wilt
- Don’t forget to make provisions for houseplants while on holiday
- Put a net over strawberry containers as they begin to ripen to prevent damage by birds
- Treat Apple Scab by pruning out affected shoots and disposing of diseased leaves
- Deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials to ensure continuous flowering
- Cut back growth in hanging baskets to encourage new flowers, remembering to feed afterwards
Top Tips
Leave cut grass on the lawn to preserve moisture if the weather is very dry and cut a little higher.
