Ready to plant, chrysanthemums are fantastic autumn-flowering plants, bringing long-lasting colour to containers, patio pots, beds and borders. Their masses of colourful blooms make them ideal for brightening up the garden as summer displays begin to fade.

Planting out:

Water the compost thoroughly immediately before planting out. For containers, use a good-quality multi-purpose or container compost and choose a pot with good drainage. Space plants far enough apart to give them room to develop while still creating a full-looking display from the start. Plant so the top of the rootball sits level with the surface of the compost, gently firm in and water thoroughly.

In beds and borders, choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 30–45cm (12–18in) apart, depending on the variety and its eventual size. Dig a planting hole slightly larger than the rootball and incorporate some compost or well-rotted organic matter into the soil. Position the plant so the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, gently firm in and water thoroughly.

Growing on:

Keep chrysanthemums well watered, particularly during dry weather, but avoid allowing plants to sit in waterlogged compost or soil. Plants growing in containers will need watering more frequently than those planted in beds and borders.

Feed regularly during the growing and flowering period with a high-potash liquid plant food, following the instructions on the container. This will encourage healthy growth and plenty of flowers.

Remove yellowing or dead leaves as necessary and regularly deadhead fading and finished flowers. This keeps plants looking tidy and can help prolong the flowering display. Taller varieties may benefit from support to prevent stems becoming damaged by wind or the weight of their flowers.

As flowering finishes and colder weather arrives, protect plants from prolonged periods of severe frost and excessive winter wet, particularly chrysanthemums grown in containers.
