Calathea species are a perfect option for low-lit indoor spaces. This rainforest native is adapted to growing in shaded areas, thus a perfect fit for low-lit spots in your office or house. Although they do not often bloom indoors, some species produce bright orange flowers under ideal conditions. Most species have attractive, green variegation on leaf blades with purple undersides. The foliage tends to stand boldly away from the main plant thus their response to various temperature, light and humidity stimuli is noticeable. Medium-sized plants can be placed on the bed-side to help in air purification. They also form lovely displays in offices, hallways and can be used to accessorise your bathroom as it loves a high humidity environment.

Origin: Tropical forests of South America; Bolivia and Brazil

Plant care

How much sun: Semi-shaded.

Where to place: Place the Calathea in a draft-free spot close to a window. Ensure that the area can allow in bright but indirect light.

Temperature & Humidity: Calathea is a tropical plant. It requires a humidity of 50 - 80% and temperatures between 65 and 85° F. In dry environments, make sure that the plant is misted. Calathea can experience a stunted growth if succumbed to a long period exposure to temperatures below 55° F. Stand the pot on a saucer of gravel and water, with the water level just shy of the top of the gravel, to create humidity.

Watering: Maintain a regular watering regime. Keep the soil moist. Avoid over-watering as it can cause root rot.

Plant Nutrition: Apply liquid fertilizer on a monthly basis. Make sure that the fertilizer is diluted to half of its concentration. Do not feed nutrients during winter as growth is minimal during this time. Contrary, fertilize during spring and summer.

Toxicity: Calathea species are pet –friendly houseplants. They are non-toxic cats and dogs.
