With its bold and glossy dark green foliage that may come in white or yellow stripes, Aspidistra elatior is a beautiful low-maintenance houseplant that has been popular since Victorian times. It boasts of the name ‘cast iron plant’ owing to its ability to withstand murky and poor air quality conditions. The cast-iron plant has a fairly slow growth rate, and spring is simply the best time to plant it.  It’s a perfect choice for newbie gardeners and busy professionals offering lots of life with stylish decor to an otherwise dull space. Aspidistras are popularly gifted to men due to their broad leaves and easy-care nature. The cast-iron plant is a pretty sight to behold and worth your coin. You can never go wrong with an Aspidistra!

Origin: Native to South East specifically China, Taiwan, and Japan

Plant care

How much sun: Thrives best under partial to full shade and are intolerant of direct sun

Where to place:  Place your cast iron plant in a bright, indirect light spot in a dark, gloomy corner as it tolerates shady conditions, and avoid placing it in full sunlight. It has proven to be very tolerant of shade.

Temperature & Humidity: Thebest environment for Cast iron is temperatures between 60° and 75° F. Moderate humidity levels are ideal but it's not a necessity for its healthy growth.

Watering:  Water your Aspidistra when the soil starts to become dry a few inches deep from the top. Always keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause root rot and browning of leaf tips.

Plant Nutrition: Applying a weak feed or all-purpose liquid fertilizer every once or twice a month during the growing season encourages fuller foliage. Always apply the fertilizer after watering the plant to avoid burning the roots.

Toxicity: The Aspidistra elatior is not toxic to humans, cats, dogs, and more generally to pets.
