Plant care
How much sun: A combination of either partial shade to partial sun. Bright indirect light can suffice.
Where to place: Place your Gardenia plant in a bright spot, a probably a few metres away from a window. Can tolerate short periods of direct sunlight.
Temperature & Humidity: Enjoys high temperatures above 60-70°F and higher humidity levels of above 60%. Stand in a saucer of gravel, with water just below the surface.
Watering: Keep soil moist at all times but avoid over watering. During winter, only water the plants when the soil feels dry (1-2 inches deep finger test).
Plant Nutrition: Gardenias thrive when in acidic media, hence an acid-based (e.g. for Rhododendrons) fertilizer works best. Minimize fertilizer application during winter. Apply an acid-based fertilizer once or twice monthly at half-strength during the growing season.
Toxicity: The leaves and flowers are slightly toxic to dogs, cats and horses. They are not toxic to humans.
