An Italian specialty bean that's ideal for fresh use or as dried seeds (haricots) in a wide range of dishes. The seeds and pods are attractively mottled, and will last throughout winter if stored in airtight jars.
Sow in pots or trays on a windowsill or in a greenhouse using a good quality compost. Cover seeds with 38mm (2") compost. Germination 7-14 days. Grow on, planting outside or protecting with cloches until frost risk has passed. Alternatively, sow direct into prepared, warm, moist soil, first erecting canes or netting to eventually support plants, sowing one seed per cane or at 15-23cm (6-9") intervals along the row at a depth of 50mm (2"). Grows best in rich, well prepared soil. Mulch with manure, straw or a layer of grass clippings. Climbing French Beans can be more reliable croppers than runner beans. Water well during dry weather. Sowing to Cropping - 10-12 weeks.
