Azaleas are just as colourful in spring as their more flamboyant cousins – rhododendrons. More refined in look and stature, they are often easier to accommodate in gardens, and have a wider range of lively, bright flower colours. Choose from low-growing, evergreen azaleas – sometimes called Japanese azaleas – or deciduous azaleas, many of which also have attractive and colourful autumn leaf colours and beautifully scented flowers. Being lime-hating, acid-loving, ericaceous plants, they need an acidic soil. If your soil isn’t suitable, grow them in containers of ericaceous compost.
