Jermor Shallot
Jermor is an excellent shallot with a superb sweet taste. With its slightly elongated shape and delicious taste, this copper coloured shallot is especially popular in the kitchen.
Best planted in the autumn, ‘Jermor’ shallots give you a good harvest of uniform bulbs that make picking easy in early summer. This reliable output and ease to grow was recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have awarded it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
Sets should be ideally planted in loose, well-drained fertile soil with the addition of a nutrient-boosting feed or fertiliser, to further improve yields.
Plant ‘Jermor’ sets at a depth of 3cm/1? and a spacing of around 12cm/5?. Check the sets every few days and re-plant any that have been disturbed by birds until growth starts.
If early hard frosts are forecast, protect the shoots with a mulch of leaf mould or straw, and water as normal when temperatures rise in late spring. When harvested, these shallots will store well in a cool, dry, frost-free place, giving you a sustained supply of sweet tasting bulbs.
