Our approach to responsible business

At Notcutts, social and environmental concerns are never far from the top of our agenda.

As a responsible business, we are committed to protecting the planet, selecting ethical suppliers and sourcing sustainable products wherever possible. You can read our policy on biodiversity, sustainability and the environment here. Notcutts is family-owned with a rich heritage and history and we aim to be stewards of the environment and the communities we serve.

We also recognise that our customers are conscientious about where their purchases come from. We will always endeavour to act with ethical credentials on your behalf.

Our values

At Notcutts we have three core values that we hold very dear: passion, inspiration and expertise.

  • Passion for gardening, the natural world, our customers, employees and the communities in which we operate.
  • Inspiration gained from the beauty and enjoyment of plants and nature.
  • Expertise gained from generations of experience and shared with our customers to allow them to enjoy their gardens.

Our promise and aims

We adopt a considered and proactive approach in making a responsible contribution to the things we care about most, in particular , our customers, colleagues, communities, products, suppliers and garden centres.

Our customers

We hope to earn our customers’ loyalty by sharing their passion for gardening. Our goal is to provide inspiration in our fabulous ranging and displays and expertise through friendly, well informed advice.

Our products

Whether you’re browsing instore or visiting online, we aim to offer quality, value and choice in our products. It is always our preference to source close to home. Where we need to look further afield, we look for clear product traceability and sustainability of raw materials where possible.

Our communities

We benefit from working within and being a part of the communities around our garden centres. We aim to be a good neighbour and also contribute positively to an improved community.

Our suppliers

Integrity is very important to us. We seek to build partnerships with those who share our values, especially regarding the environment and working practices.

Our garden centres and offices

As well as being safe and inspiring places to work, browse and eat, our garden centres aim to reduce waste and maximise efficiency of resources. We are always looking for ways to reduce and recycle our waste (including packaging) and seek to minimise the environmental impact of getting products to our garden centres.

Our people

We aim for a motivated, empowered, skilled and diverse team that work in a safe environment. We want all our colleagues to enjoy and take pride in where they work. All team members are afforded the opportunity to progress and share in the benefits of the business.

Modern slavery act

We take the rights of all workers involved in bringing our products to our garden centres very seriously. All suppliers of directly imported products provide Notcutts with an annual corporate social responsibility assessment and these are supported by checks from our agents to ensure our suppliers are compliant, not just with the Modern slavery act, but also in maintaining good working conditions and employment practices.

Our support for charities

Our charity partner is Green Light Trust whose mission it is to ensure everyone has access to the power of nature. The charity supports a diverse range of people through access to nature and the outdoors. Notcutts are passionate about the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors and green care and are delighted to support the work of the charity.

Previously we have partnered with Thrive, a charity who use gardening to support people and change lives. We are proud to have supported 27 students in in social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) through the Charles Notcutt Bursary. In addition we jointly launched an online course ‘Cultivating Wellbeing’ that was open to all to help people learn about the wellbeing benefits of being in gardens and nature.

We support local charities and communities through the Pennies initiative. In the five years of working together our customers have donated almost £500,000.
